New Prime Minister with 1980s policies.

7 September 2022

As speculated , the climate crisis would not be much of a priority for the new PMs Government as Liz Truss had already shown her cards during the lengthy Tory public showdown to get her selected by her party.

Among the new title holders in the PMs cabinet is Jacob Rees-Mogg who holds the post of Secretary of Sate for Business,Energy and Industrial Strategy. Previously the minister for Brexit Opportunities he has a record of dismissing the threat of global warming.

A local Green Party campaigner, Sarah commented about the situation,

' polling shows that the climate remains high on the publics' list of concerns, yet Truss cannot find a dedicated minister for it. She must realise that the climate and cost of living crisis are heavily intertwined. More nuclear, oil and gas will take years to implement and will be disastrous for the planet. She must come up with a strategy for insulating homes and keeping energy companies in check'

Southampton local Green Party has for decades called for more renewable energy projects to be located within the Hamshire area. As little attempt to secure renewable energy locally has occurred, Southampton residents will also be stuck with spiralling energy costs and possibly for years to come.

Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer has already said on Monday,

“Burning more fossil fuels will simply speed up climate breakdown, giving us more extreme heat, floods, storms and food shortages in the UK and across the world.

“This reckless plan, along with promises to cut the so-called green levy, demonstrates that Truss is making an ideological choice to curry favour with friends and Tory Party donors in the oil and gas industry.

“What is needed is to return energy to a more affordable level, which is why the Green Party  has put forward its proposal to restore the energy price cap to the October 2021 rate of £1,277 and implement rapid investment in a nationwide home insulation programme while developing more renewable energy.  This will provide the immediate action needed to help people right now, as well as looking ahead to ensure costs and emissions are kept to a minimum in the years to come.

“We can invest in a cleaner, greener, more affordable future. Whether we do so is a political choice. We urge Liz Truss to take a path that helps create a fairer society while tackling the climate crisis.”

End.
