Green Party supports Global Climate Strike

9 June 2019

Green Party co-leaders Sian Berry and Jonathan Bartley have called for adults to join children in the global strike against climate change later this year.

At the Green Party conference held in Scarborough on 7 June, the national co-leaders backed the Student Climate Strikes and called on those able to do so to join the strike in September.

Speaking to the conference, Jonathan said: “Young people have laid down a challenge. And conference, we will take it up. Today we are joining that call for a global strike in September.

“So we say this to those able to do so:  'Tell your friends. Tell your family. Tell your employers that the emergency is right here, right now. And we must strike for the climate.'”

The Global Climate Strike will see people all over the world use their power to stop “business as usual” in the face of the climate emergency. After millions of school strikers have shown their determination for climate action, it is time for us all to join them in the streets to demand an end to fossil fuels and call for emergency action to avoid climate breakdown.

The party co-leaders also backed the Green New Deal to counter the climate change emergency and demanded that the Government scrap Trident nuclear weapons, ditch HS2 and reject new nuclear power plants.
