What has been billed an emergency budget today was a rapid round of cuts mainly focussing on welfare, tax credits and things like student maintanance grants. The minimum wage has been increased, eventually to be called the living wage for workers over 25 years of age. There is though an emphasis to incentivise company directors with further cuts in corporation tax.
The previous Tory lead coalition side lined climate change policies and now further contempt has been placed by the chancellor reminding us of the tax breaks North Sea Oil is already getting.
Southampton Green Party spokesperson Joe Cox remarked “ I would have preferred some of the annual defense spending commitment of 2% of GDP to go towards protecting and defending the climate for future generations. The most serious threat to our Nation is climate change and today George Osbourne has done nothing more to tackle it.”
