The £31million Blackhole in Southampton City Council's budget means more despair for those who can least afford it.

6 February 2015

2015: 300 jobs lost, the vast majority to come from the city’s Adult Social Care team.

The cuts to Adult Social Care services which are already agreed will see the loss of Woodside Lodge care home and Kentish Road respite centre and day services. The new Council budget will see even deeper cuts in care services and the loss of hundreds of jobs.

Angela Mawle, Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Southampton Test, said:

“Whilst the flawed logic of austerity reigns supreme, we are cutting the very services that keep our country functioning.

It is a mark of a civilized society that it should provide people with the basic needs of health, housing, income and security. As the Green Party, we refuse to accept the inevitability of the human suffering imposed by this broken austerity programme.”

The job losses come on top of cutbacks that have already left the NHS in Hampshire struggling to cope, with a quarter of hospital beds taken up by people well enough to go home but with no care services available to support them.

“The inevitable outcome of austerity is a crushing squeeze on local councils who struggle to operate with endlessly diminishing budgets, unable to provide even the most basic services, and unable to fulfil their statutory obligations in social services, housing and local community services on which we all depend,” Angela Mawle commented.
